Introduction to iPad Use in the Classroom

Our grade 4 class (division 8) at Green Timbers Elementary school had the wonderful opportunity to incorporate the use of iPads supplied by CUEBC to our program for three weeks. We would like to share with the parents and the public a few of the things we were able to accomplish using only the "free apps" and access to the internet through the ipads.

Reading - Visualization

Students selected an image from the internet that reminded them of the farm from the book Charlotte's Web.  The showme app allowed the students to share images that did not require them to utilize fine motor skills, that is to draw a picture.  Notice how well the program allows for scafolding.

*showme is our favorite teaching app

Math - Lines of Symmetry

Students moved around the classroom taking pictures of objects that showed 0, 1, 2, and more than 2 lines of symmetry.  We used the jotdot app for this assignment.  Some students had multiple examples for each number.  If we had more time with the iPads we would have also used the showme app to assess students on their knowledge of long division with remainders.

Fine Arts - Drama and Dance

Our class focused on drama for our fine arts component of the curriculum this term.  We used the iPads to video tape our plays to help students improve on their acting skills.  The iPads were also used to video tape the students during their dance performance.  The visual feedback was very effective in helping students improve their skills.
